The
Face on Mars
In
July, 1976, Viking Orbiter 1 was acquiring images of the
Cydonia region of Mars as part of the search for potential
landing sites for Viking Lander 2. On 25 July, 1976, it
photographed a region of buttes and mesas along the escarpment
that separates heavily cratered highlands to the south from
low lying, relatively crater-free, lowland plains to the
north. Among the hills was one that, to the Viking investigators
resembled a face. An image including the face-like hill
was released as part of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's
public relations effort.

comparison of Viking (left) and
Surveyor Images
The
original images where of poor quality but tantalizing. Not
only was there a face shaped mountain but south of that
land form were structures resembling pyramids and other
large buildings. For over 20 years NASA was hounded to re-photograph
the area with a more sophisticated camera, and in 1998 they
did just that. The images from the Mars Global Surveyor
are many times better than the original Viking images and
to most reveal natural formations. This has not stopped
some, however, who are seeing everything from windows to
building walls. Mysterious Places is collecting all the
images and will present our opinions shortly on this matter.
Until then, visit the sites listed below and decide
for yourself.

Global Surveyor - Official Site View and download
the raw and processed images, some very high res, at NASA's
site. They say they are not taking a position on what the
images reveal although in interviews officials scoff at the
premise that the face and other features are artificial. For
the next several weeks the spacecraft will be in the correct
orbit to rephotograph the region so check this site from time
to time to see the latest raw data on this controversy. |

| Earth
Mysteries The term Earth Mysteries, coined
in the early 1970s, is today used to describe a multi-disciplined
or 'holistic' approach to the study of ancient sites and landscapes.
It tends to fall largely outside the accepted range of mainstream
research and is generally regarded with suspicion by academics.
This site is intended to serve as an introduction to the various
aspects of Earth Mysteries as a field of study. |

Story of well-researched fact and fictional storytelling designed
to create an intriguing, thought-provoking tale that introduces

elements of archaeology, ancient/lost civilizations, ancient
history, science fiction and adventure, the creators of Timelapse
wanted to challenge the player to ask himself/herself, "What
if this could be real? Could it have actually happened?"
Beautifully rendered art make this game worth owning just
