Located 2300 miles West of Chile Easter Island is the world's most
isolated inhabited island. Covering only 64 square miles this tiny speck
of land has been called the planet's largest open air museum. The Polynesians
who found themselves stranded here 2000 years ago spent decades building
some of the most perplexing and astonishing monuments ever seen.
Ahu Tahai, located on the islands Western coast is one of the most enigmatic
sites. It is different from the usual row of statues which would traditionally
be very similar to each other in size and stature. The statues of Ahu Tahai
seem to represent a family group. The Ahu (platform) which the statues were
erected is built up of thousands of stones and is directly on the shoreline,
with the statues facing inland, watching over the village below. Indications
are that this was an important ceremonial site.
