In the early 1900's whalers ravaged the seas surrounding Antarctica. Hundreds of thousands of Blue, Humpback, Minke, and Sperm whales where hunted and killed. Most of the carcasses were thrown back into the sea. Some were piled one on top of another in shallow bays. When whaling operations in Antarctica became unprofitable the whalers left behind piles of bones on the shores of their bases. Researchers have reconstructed some of the skeletons in order to better understand the lives of these massive animals. Here, in Port Lockroy, we found one such reconstruction, situated against some of the most spectacular mountains next to the Himalayas. |
